STUDIES - Szabolcs Anzelm Szuromi: Canon Law Handbook by Ivo of Chartres

102 SZABOLCS ANZELM SZÚROM I III. The manuscript BAV Pal. lat. 587 The manuscript Pal. lat. 587 of the Bibliotheca Apostolica Vaticana48 is a witness of the Decretum,49 one of the three canonical works of Ivo of Chartres. The BAV Pal. lat. 587 can be divided into two distinct parts. The first part of the codex begins on fol. Ira and it finishes on fol. 4ra, marked with a rubric: Exceptiones ecclesiasticarum.50 The parchments are very clear, but are not too thin. The text on the pages is divided into two columns. The size of the folios is 320 X 300 mm. The whole manuscript was made of eight folios quires and it was copied in the 12th century, which is supported by the script form. The Ivonian collection begins at the bottom of fol. 4ra with the Tabula Librorum, which contains seventeen titles. But there is no mark to indicate that this collection is aDecretum of Ivo of Chartres. The first book immediately follows this list of the books, without a list of the contents, on fol. 4rb. The opening text of this book is attributed to St. Augustine. He is the author of the other thirty-nine texts, which use the same text of St. Augustine at the beginning of Book 1. This material indicates some problems, because based on Friedberg’s edition of the Decretum Gratiani, some of these texts do not belong to the contents of Ivo’s Decretum, but no other Ivonian works contain them either.51 This first section ends with a letter of Pope Leo I (440-461)52 after the forty canons of St. Augustine on the last folio of the quire. If we analyze the texts on the next folio, we can find there two fragments 48 See Codices Palatini Latini Bibliothecae Vaticanae (Bibliothecae Apostolicae Vaticanae Codices Manuscripti Recensiti), ed. I. B. Pitra - H. Jr. Stevenson - I. B. De Rossi (Romae 1886) I. 197. About the provenance of BAV Pal. lat. 587, P. Landau recently gave some suggestions as to its possible Scandinavian origin. 49 Edition: PL 161. 67-1022; cf. P. Landau, “Das Dekret des Ivo von Chartres.
