cepting hairs of segment H - relegable to a graded sequence as follows: ei (150 p) > c 2 (108 fii > cj (104 ja)>fj (96 ;x)>f 2 (63 p,) > e 2 (60 p,). All setae filiform apicad. Hair hj of segment H long (48 p), rigid, straight, sparsely ciliate. Ventral side (Fig. 20): All apodemes, and especially apodeme 4 well developed, this latter reaching lateral margins of posterior sternal plate. Hair la especially striking, thick and densely ciliate. Hairs arranged in a longitudinal row, each one reaching insertion of its posterior neighbour. Hairs 4b approaching posterior margin of body. Legs: Tibiotarsus of leg I (Fig. 21), elongate, claw small, short-stalked. Chitinous peg of hair d also short. Solenidium CJ j thick, obtuse, CJ 2 adjacent, considerably longer but thinner, arcuate. Form and chaetotaxy of legs II and IV as in Fig. 22. Material examined: Holotype: Washington, Clallam Co., Olympic Nat. Forest, 18 July, 1972, on Neurotrichus gibbsi, leg. G. S. JONES; 1 paratype: (T1724-75), collected together with the holotype, in: HNHM; 6 paratypes: 3 ex. (T17 25-75), in: HNHM; 2 ex. in: USNM; 1 ex. in: MHNG; 2 paratypes: 1 ex. (T1726-75) in: HNHM; 1 ex. in: USNM: California, Humbold CO., Trinidad, 9 July, 1972, Neurotrichus gibbsoni, leg. G. S. JONES (1961); 1 ex. (T-1727-75): Alberta Prov. Forest, 10 August, 1972, Sorex palustris, leg. G. S. JONES (1300). Remarks: According to its habit, the new species stands nearest to B. suzukii Sasa, 1961, supported also by the form of the hairs on segment H. However, on the basis of the characteristically situated solenidia of leg I - cjj aligned with or slightly behind uj 2 - it is easily distinguishable from all other congeners. I dedicate the new species to G. S. JONES, USA, the collector of the valuable study materials, Bakerdania plurisetosa sp. n. Measurements. - Length 266-282 p,, breadth: 174-186 p,. Habitus: Propodosoma relatively small, hysterosoma wide, its sides nearly parallel, posterior margin widely rounded. Surface very finely punctate. Dorsal side (Fig, 23): Peritremas large, round. Sensillus comparatively small, its surface densely aciculate. Hair in minute, hair exo resembling those of hysterosoma. These latter are robust. Hair e 2 terminating in a conical apex, all others filiform, attenuating: their sequence according to size: ej (146 p), fj (130 p), c 2 (100 ju^cj (91 juj^dj (86 /t)'>f 2 (72 ju)>e 2 (47 p,). Hair h^ of segment H ciliate, basally with shorter, distally with longer and denser cilia; hairs h 2 and hg simple, straight, very short.' Ventral side (Fig. 24): Apodemes developed, though apodeme 4 attenuated when reaching lateral margin of posterior sternal plate. Excepting for hair lb, all setae long and robust, especially hair la, also bearing very long and densely arranged cilia. Legs: Tibiotarsus of leg I (Fig. 26) with an extremely long-stalked small claw; hair d originating also on a very long chitinous peg. Solenidia aj ^ andc*J 2 aligned at the same height, or CJ 2 (considerably shorter and arcuate) slightly behindcU 1 (!). Shape and chaetotaxy of legs II-IV as in Fig. 25. Material examined: Holotype: N. Am. 1.; Paratypes 2 ex.: 1 ex.: (T-1728-74) in: HNHM; 1 ex. in: USNM; 1 ex. (T1729-74) in: HNHM; 1 ex.: in: MHNG; Indiana, Parke Co., 9 November, 1972, Scalopus- aquaticus, leg. J. O. WHITAKER (8076). Remarks: Owing especially to the characteristic, brush-like hair hj, the species stands alone among its congeners. It should be noted that in certain respects (habit, proportion of dorsal setae and especially the position and form of the solenidia on leg I) the new species greatly resembles B. pluriseta described above. However the other differences are so great that they cannot be closely related. Bakerdania equisetosa Cross, 1970 This species described from South Georgia.
