SUMMARY JÓZSEF HUDI An officíal Order by the Lieutenant of the Town Pápa in the 18,h Century The lieutenant of Pápa took an important role in the local government of the privileged market- town.He administered several Offices in the second half of the 18*1' Century. Elected from román catholic citizens, he served as a chief-constable, a fire-chief and a town-curator. According to his form of oath still extant he was controlled by the chief justice and his activity was regulated by two Orders (1780, 1793). He excercised control over the night guard, which looked after the properties of residents and prevented fire.He had no power over noble men, they were led by three noble public criers. The lieutenant provided fór the guard and maintenance of fire- fighting equipments and the cultivation of lands owned by the town. One-third of collected incomes was his salary and from 1793 he received a set salary.
