Archival basic concepts
ARCHIVAL BASIC CONCEPTS Substance A smaller archive unit created within the archive based on organizational, functional, objective, formal etc. classification. Archive A collective of permanent value documents belonging to each other based on belonging into the archive material of an organization, or a person, or based on identity of some relation such as era, personal, objective, area, formal, etc. characteristics. Main Archive Archival unit oi several archive groups within an Archive. The documents of general Archives of Hungary are uniformly divided into I-XXXVII main archives. The I-III. and the XVIII-XX. main archives contain the national authority institutions. The documents of these are stored in the National Archives of Hungary (Magyar Országos Levéltár). The county archives - such as the Pest County Archives - classified their documents into the IV-XXXVIl main archives. Archive and Substance Register is a kind of archive register aid that lists the documents of the actual archive at archive and substance level. Collection A collective of documents selected according to some point of view (era, person, subject, area, shape, etc.) deriving from different origin archives. (Document) linear meter ([d]lm) Unit of measurement for measuring volume of archival material. Sheets facing each other put next to each other extend to 1 meter. During document sorting, we discard the non-permanent, the historically not valuable documents. Rules are regulating our activities. These rules can be found at our web site. (Public) Archives 1. Institution managed by the organization carrying out public duties and archival duties regarding non-discard able public documents, including scientific and management tasks. 2. Archival unit containing several archives. Archive material Permanent part of archive materials or of documents stored in archive originating from natural person, furthermore pemianent value private document declared. Archival research Studying archival documents and collecting data from them for scientific or other goals. Permanent (historical) document, containing data cannot be learnt from other sources or can only be learnt partially, significant from economic, social, political, legal, national defence, national security, scientific, cultural, technical or from other aspects, indispensable for studying and understanding historical background, or to perform constant public duties and to enforce civic rights.
