Brief history of the Pest County Archives

Although the two towns with significant historical background have important Feudal Age sources, the documents of the settlements created before 1945 were almost completely destroyed, or only a small part of them was preserved. The documents of the Chief Constable authorized to the district are also missing. The part of documents írom 1850-1872 of the central and district organizations of Pest-Pilis-Solt County but now belonging to the current Bács-Kiskun County are kept in our Branch. There is a research facility in the archives department for undisturbed research where a special library complements the archival resources. Researchers arriving írom a longer distance can find accommodation in our well-equipped guest room. I lie \ ina n\ the Vest County Archives The Vác Branch of the Pest County Archives was opened on November 29, 1979 in the one-time Franciscan monastery. According to the intention of founders the documents stored among bad conditions in Budapest should have been placed here among better conditions, on the other hand Vác, having a rich historic background, could get back its written historical relics. The Local Council of Vác contributed to a great extent to the establishment of the Archives. The competence area of the Vác Institute includes the villages of the former Szentendre, Szob and Vác districts, and also Dunakeszi, Göd, Nagymaros, Pomáz, Szentendre, Szob, Vác and Visegrád towns. The volume of documents stored here is almost 3500 linear meters. The Vác Branch takes care of the documents produced after the Turkish occupation (1686) of the above-mentioned district level institutes, furthermore that of Szentendre and Vác. The documents of the Borough Councils usually originate from after the turn of the century. A part of the documents of state administration, and jurisdiction organizations, institutes, societies, economic institutes, clerical institutes (including the certified local archive of the chapter of Vác) functioned formerly or are still functioning on the above mentioned area, and also those of families, individuals and collections made in the archives (documents, maps, photos, photocopies) are kept in Vác.
