IV. Könyvtár- és művelődéstörténeti tanulmányok - Dán Róbert: A magyarországi hebraica bibliográfiái - Bibliographies regarding Hebrew printing in Hungary

Bibliographies regarding Hebrew printing in Hungary E. DAN No comprehensive bibliography has been published so far in connection with Hebrew printing in Hungary, although we know to exist several thousand Hebrew publications; actually only a few shorter bibliographies, dealing with a part of this extensive material, had been previously issued. It is known that the University Press of Buda had printed Hebrew publications as early as in 1814, stopping this kind of activity only in 1875. Several attempts had been made to compile a bibliography covering the Hebrew titles printed by the press: in the last century István Baloghy, in the thirties of our century Bernhard Wachstein dealt with the subject, finally, in 1961—1962 Robert Dán made attempts to list these works. The bibliographical processing of the activity of other printers of Hebrew works in Hungary was attempted by Kirjath Sepher (Bibliographical quarterly of the Jewish National and University Tibrary, Jerusalem) in its tarticles entitled "Hebrew printing in Hungary" and "Hebrew printing in Transylvania". These are bibliographies of Hebrew printing in Ungvár, Munkács, Paks, Pozsony and Felsővisó, as well as the regions of Szinerváralja and Szatmár and can be considered as fairly complete for the said areas. In 1933 Samuel Bettelheim compiled a bibliography on Hebraica found in Pozsony, however data therein were incorrect and required renewed processing. Another bibliography, N. Ben. Menachem's work dealt with Hebrew printing in Máramarossziget. — The biobibliography of J. J. Grünwald covered Hebrew printing in Hungary up to 1840, but his listing is far from complete. — Zsigmond Schwartz worked on the same subject and also published some information in this respect. — Oh. B. Friedberg, who compiled an international Hebraica bibliography, did not satisfactorily document the Hungarian material in his work. — The yearbook Areset dealt with Hebraica periodicals in its two articles entitled Hebrew periodicals in Hungary and Religious periodicals in Transylvania over 70 years. — The only secondary Hebrew bibliography, compiled by Mr. S. H. Shunami of the Jewish National and University Library, Jerusalem, included also the Hungarian material; he is now working on the second revised edition. — At the present moment the National Széchényi Library is compiling a bibliography of Hebrew printing in Hungary. The material gathered so far comprises approximately 2000 to 2200 complete bibliographical entries and more than 1000 incomplete ones. Other domestic libraries have also contributed material to this work. 370
