MAKHAN, Utrecht MAKHAN, D.: Nine new Hydrochus species from South and Central America (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae). -Annls hist-nat Mus. natn. hung. 1993, 85: 65-70. Abstract - Nine new Hydrochus species (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) are described from South and Central America: Hydrochus jethoeae sp. n., H. jialalae sp. n. from Suriname, H. merkli sp. n. from Argentina, H. otvosi sp. n. from Costa Rica, H. naraini sp. n. from Cuba, H. baloghi sp. n., H. mahunkai sp. n., H. pietersenae sp. n. and H. zicsii sp. n. from Bolivia. New synonymy: Hydrochus bruggei MAKHAN, 1992, jun. syn. = Hydrochuspiroei MAKHAN, 1992. With 10 figures. INTRODUCTION During a recent collecting trip in Suriname, I found two new species of Hydrochus. In the collection of Zoologie Museum in Amsterdam, I recognized a new species from Argentina. The Neotropical Hydrochus specimens of the Hungarian Natural History Museum were sent to me for identification and further 6 new species were found in this material. The holotype of H. merkli sp. n. from Argentina is deposited in the Instituut voor Taxonomische Zoologie (Zoologisch Museum), Amsterdam, while all other holotypes are deposited in the Coleoptera Collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest. DESCRIPTION OF NEW SPECIES In all new species the membranous wings are fully developed, the legs are testaceous, the knees darker, the maxillary palpi testaceous, the scutellum longer than wide, the two sexes (if known) are not different from each other. Head impressed between eyes (except in pietersenae where the medial part of the frons is swollen). Clypeus finely punctate, punctures weakly impressed, interstices smooth and shiny. Pronotum as wide as long (except in merkli and mahunkai where it is longer than wide). Pronotum with dense, fine punctation (except in pietersenae where it is coarse), disc with 5 large deep depressions (except in in mahunkai with 9 depressions and in otvosi and naraini with 7 depressions). Anterior margin of pronotum with 2 depressions (except mahunkai where it is with 5, and otvosi and naraini where it is with 3 depressions). Surface of the pronotum is closely punctate, the punctures deformed, especially toward the sides. Hydrochus jethoeae sp. n. (Fig- 1) Holotype: male. Suriname, District Commewijne, 7.VIII.1984, MAKHAN. - Paratypes: 9 specimens, Suriname, District Brokopondo, 6.VIII.1992, MAKHAN (one female 2.5 mm long, the rest as holotype). Description (holotype, male): Body elongate, length 2.7 mm, width 1.0 mm. Dorsal side shining. Colour of head, pronotum, scutellum and elytra greyish coppery and with a blue-green metallic gloss. Head with dense, fine punctation. Pronotum almost trapeziform, lateral sides straight, smooth.
