Makhan, D.: Nine new Hydrochus species from South and Central America (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae)
Elytral length 1.7 mm, elytra widest on posterior third, lateral side with fine granules, striai punctures coarse, interstriae narrow, tubercle on 5th interstria absent, 9th interstria flat, apical holes absent, elytral apices rounded. Male genitalia (Fig. 1): Basal piece short, páraméra narrow, apex wide and rounded, median lobe shorter than the páraméra. Etymology: The species is named after my mother-in-law, RAMRAGLA JETHOE. This species seems to be allied to H. rattanae MAKHAN, 1992 from Suriname. H. rattanae can be distinguished by the shape of male genitalia, and the lateral side of elytra of rattanae is smooth (MAKHAN 1992). Holotype: male. Suriname, District Commewijne 7.VIII.1992, MAKHAN (female unknown). Description (holotype male): Body elongate, length 3.2 mm, width 1.3 mm. Dorsal side shining. Colour of head, pronotum, scutellum and elytra greyish coppery and with a blue-green metallic gloss. Head with dense, fine punctation. Pronotum almost trapeziform, lateral side straight, smooth. Elytral length 2.4 mm, elytra widest on posterior third, lateral side with fine granules, striai punctures coarse, interstriae narrow, tubercle on 5th interstria small but distinct, 9th interstria convex. Apical holes in two series, upper row with 5 holes, lower row with 8 holes reaching the posterior third of the elytron. Elytral apices rounded and broadened. Male genitalia (Fig. 3): Basal piece broken, parameres narrow, with apices sagittate, median lobe a little shorter than the páraméra. Etymology: This species is named after my niece, SOEMINTRA JIALAL. This species seems to be allied to H. ramcharani MAKHAN, 1992 from Suriname, by the two rows of holes on the apical side.
