The Versi pel le-group A. Fructifying under Gisctus H. eis to phi lu m R. MAIRE A. In alpine or subalpine habitats H. kiihneri BRUCHET, H. margiuatulum (FAVRE) BRUCHET, H. nigellum BRUCHET, H. remyi BRUCHET, H. repandum BRUCHET, A. In other habitats B. Spores large: 10-13 g.. Colour of gills shaded carneous C. Stem bulbous. Smell strong raphanaceous. Taste bitter. Spores amygdaliform nearly lemon-shaped. H. clavulipes ROMAGN. C. Stem equal, attenuated upwards or downwards D. Taste — especially later —bitter E. Smell mostly cocoa-like, when cut raphanaceous. Cortine weakly developed, very fugacious. Spores amygdaliform. H. testaceum ss. BRUCHET E. Smell absent. Cortine well developed. Spores ovoid, rarely subamygdaliform. H. collariatum BRUCHET D. Taste not bitter. Smell absent or moderately raphanaceous. Spores ellipsoid or elongated pruniform. H. versipelle (FR.) GILL. ss. KONE. & MAUBL. B. Spores smaller: 8-10 \x. Colour of gills without a carneous tinge. C. Stature of fruitbody as in Pholiota carbonaria. Flesh in stem-base slightly brown. H. versipelle (FR.) GILL. SS. ROMAGN. C. Stature of fruitbody different, slender. Flesh in stem brown rather higher upwards. H. mesophaeum (PERS. ex FR.) QUEL. Hebeloma vcrsipelle (FR.) GILL. SS. KONR. & MAUBL. (Fig. 3.) No more recorded ia recent literature. The fungus resembles — among others — H. mesophaeum (PERS. ex FR). QUEL., but differs by the following characteristics: I. spores larger; 10-13 p. long, 2. colour of gills tinged carneous; 3. colour of pileus usually lighter than in mesophaeum; 4. stem not rarely more or less thickened (to even 1.3 cm) : cap of such specimens frequently as wide as length of stem. An excellent illustration is given in KONRAD & MAUBLANC (1924-1930), tab. 78(1), and a poorer figure in COOKE (1884-1886), tab. 451/410. sub nom. H. claviceps Fr. It is also similar to H. versipelle (FR.) GILL. SS. ROMAGN., described in 1965, in which, however, the colour of the gills lack the carneous tinge, the stem is rather short, the stature resembles that of Pholiota carbonaria, and the spores are small (7.7-9.2 jx). Description : Pileus 2.5-6 cm in diam. ; convex-expanded, occasionally gibbous, at length also depressed; in wet weather moderately viscid; especially margin covered with fibrillose velum ; rusty brownish, clay-coloured, rusty ochre or brownish ochre; margin occasionally lighter and centre rusty brown, reddish brown or
