Steel, W. O.: New species of Staphylinidae collected by L. Biró in New Guinea (Coleoptera)

Tergites of abdomen punctured as in the male, apical margins of the sternites of the seventh and eighth segments rounded. Length : 1,35—1,5 mm. Astrolabe Bay: Friedrich-Wilhelmshafen, 1901 (Holotype [male], allotype and 6 paratypes). O. birói differs from all described New Guinea species of the genus in the sculpture and the form of the maxillary palpi and aedeagus. In the structure of the palpi and the general form of the aedeagus, it resembles the widespread Indo-Malayan species, 0. pygmaeus Kraatz, but is abundantly different from this in colour and sculpture. Only two males were available for study and these show no variation in the shape of the head and pronotum. Such variation might, however, be expected to occur. Osorius striaticeps n. sp. (figs. 13—15) Head greasy lustrous, pronotum, elytra and abdomen shining. Body entirely black in mature specimens, antennae and legs dark brown, palpi and tarsi a little lighter. Head transverse, narrower than the pronotum, about one and one half times as broad as long, the eyes small and not prominent, the sides subparallel behind the eyes, rather strongly converging in front, the anterior angles rather sharply rounded, the right sometimes less rounded than the left, the front margin lightly rounded or almost straight, its width (as compared with the width across the eyes) a little variable. Surface, except posteriorly, closely and finely longitudinally carinate, the carinae extending as far as the front margin but absent on the antennái tubercles which are smooth and polished, amongst the carinae with moderately close, scarcely visible setiferous punctures, the setae directed inwards or obliquely forwards, the posterior portion not carinate but with a more or less oblique, coriaceous ground sculpture. Antennae moderate in length, the first segment long, narrowed in the middle, the second narrower and much shorter than the first, the third as broad as and distinctly longer than the second, widened apically, the fourth about as broad as and distinctly shorter than the third, longer than broad, the fifth to tenth differing but little in length, slightly longer than the fourth, the fifth a little longer than broad, the tenth about as long as broad, the eleventh longer than the tenth, bluntly pointed apically. Pronotum about one and one sixth times as broad as long, widest just behind the rounded front angles, distinctly narrowed posteriorly, the sides straight, the posterior angles rounded, the base lightly rounded ; narrowly impressed inside each posterior angle, the lateral margins fine, the basal margin broader and less marked. Surface, except for a moderately broad longitudinal median space, with close, rather fine, elongate, setiferous punctures, these punctures are impressed at an angle to the surface and each is bordered externally by a short ridge, the setae directed inwards or obliquely forwards, between the punctures without visible ground sculpture. Elytra about one and one third times as long as the suturai length which is a little shorter than the pronotum, slightly broader than the pronotum, broadest behind middle, the sides lightly rounded. Surface with very superficial, round, setiferous punctures which are about as close as those on the pronotum, the setae directed inwards or obliquely backwards, between the punctures without visible ground sculpture.
