found another clutch of five of this bird in indentical circumstances in the same vineyard, 13 June, 1947 ; and a nest with six eggs here again, 3. July, 1948. 3. Emberiza hortulana L. Ortolan Bunting. — I found its nest under a vine in a large vineyard and orchard bordering on the woods of the Jakabhegy, 21. May, 1948. Its clutch was six fresh eggs. 4. Lanias c. collurio L. Red-backed Shrike. — I found a clutch of four eggs in an orchard under the Jakabhegy, 24 May, 1944 ; and a clutch of six at the Lapis refuge, 9. June, 1945. Next year, I discovered a clutch of .seven along a road leading between vineyards under the Jakabhegy, 15. May, 1946. Other data from 1946 : A clutch of six and another of five in Mecsekszabolcs 26. May ; a clutch of five on the Tubes, 28. May. It is generally not frequent in the Mecsek ; one or two nesting pair occur in vineyards and orchards that touch on fringes of woods ; it especially likes living hedges, but I have come upon its nest also on apple and prune trees. It is nesting in the forest only very rarely and then also beside the bigger roads. 5. Monticola saxatilis L. Rock-thrush. — I happened on its nest with four eggs in a vineyard with stony ground on the Jakabhegy, 12. July, 1945. I found its clutch of five in the same place 15. May, 1946; and a clutch of six here again, 12. May, 1947; with a clutch of six again in 27. April, 1948. I have again found a nest with six eggs here in this year (1952). The nest was in a stone wall, that is,under vines on .the ground. I have observed the bird itself also over Pécs in the edge of woods bordering on the Misina gardens, and also at Mecsekszabolcs : always on very stony ground of the craggy southern slopes. 6. Oenanthe oe. oenanthe L. Wheatear. — I found its clutch of six, eggs in the same place and circumstances than those of the Rock-thrush, 12. May, 1947 ; and found again a clutch of five in the same place, 4. May, 1948. Then I found the third clutch witch five eggs in this year, 21. May, 1952. It was seen in other parts of the Mecsek only sporadically ; but it is rather frequent in the southern, stony vineyards. 7. Saxicola torquata rubicola L. Stonechat. —• I have observed one pair in a barren place with some bushes near Hosszúhetény, under the Hármashegy, 4. May, 1947. On the ground of this datum and the behaviour of the birds I presume their nesting in the Mecsek. I have seen them nowhere else in the Mountains. 8. Phoenicurus ochrurus gibraltariensis Gm. — Black Redstart. — I have found it nesting in identical place with that of the Rockthrush under the Jakabhegy, 15. May, 1946; the nest was placed on a beam of the press-house's loft. I have found another clutch of five eggs here : the nest having been built into the wall of a dilapidated stable in the same place, 29. May, 1947. I saw a specimen on the southern slope of the Misina, 23. October, 1943. It is relatively more rare on the vineyard slopes of the Mecsek than its relative of the gardens ; I have never found it in the woods or in the mountains. 9. Upupa e, epops L. Hoopoe. — I did not find it nesting, but I have observed it in breeding time around Óbánya in the Eastern Mecsek. I have come upon it many times in the middle-aged, rare oak forest on the southern side of the Misina between 8—21. May, 1952. 10. Jynx t. torquilla L. Wryneck. — I found it nesting in an oak wood at the foot of the Jakabhegy, 24. May, 1944 ; its clutch were eleven eggs. I found its clutch of seven also under the Jakabhegy, in an orchard, 8. June, 1952. Once I have seen it near the Kozári hunting lodge in a nest box. Habitat VIII. Settlements 1. Chloris c. chloris. Greenfinch. — Nesting data : I have looked over the small garden of the Zsolnay Mausoleum in Pécs, and found seven occupied nests on the thuja trees, 24, 27. April, and 6. March, 1946. Then I found two other nests on the Dome place, 7. May. There was a nest on an oak tree in the rare oak woods of the Jakabhegy, 1. May. Two pairs were nesting at the Zsolnay Mausoleum, 3. May. Data of observations : Two specimens seen over Tettye on a wood's edge, 6. January ; one in the vine plantations over Pécs, 7. February, one over Patacs, on the side of the Jakabhegy, 20. March ; and a flock of seven specimens near Zobák, 23. March. 2. Carduelis c. carduelis L. Goldfinch. — Nesting data : I found its clutch of four on an acacia tree near Pécs-bányatelep, 14. July, 1945 ; another nest was on an apricot tree in a vineyard on the side of the Jakabhegy, 20. May ; its clutch consisted of five eggs. I have found another clutch of five eggs in the same place, 17. June, 1948. Then there was a pair nesting (clutch of five eggs) on a chestnut tree in the Játszótér of Pécs. It is a frequent bird also around and in the settlements. Date of observations : four specimens seen in the woods under the Üdülőszálló (Hotel), 22. January, 1946 ; then there were fourteen specimens together with Yellow Buntings and Chaffinches on the southern side of the Misina, 6. February ; three specimens in the Mandulás, 16. Febr. ; thirtyeight specimens on a tree, and twentyeight other specimens on another tree deep in the forest on the southern side of the Misina, 20. Febr ; one in the wood on
