Horváth, L.: The ornis of the Mecsek Mountains based on oecologic and oologic researches

the southern slope of the Jakabhegy, 20. March ; then ten specimens in the same place on a tree, 28. March. 3. Serinus canarius serinus L. Serin. — I found it nesting on a chestnut tree in a street of Pécs, 16. July, 1945 ; then I found another one on the Játszótér of Pécs, 7 July, 1948 ; and 1 discovered a nest far from any human dwelling place in the Éger valley under the Jakabhegy, 21 June. A pair was nesting in the yard of a house in Pécs, 10. July. It is rather frequent in Pécs ; it is nesting everywhere in bigger gardens, parks, and streets with trees. I have also found it in other settlements of the Mecsek's foot. It goes into the woods only rarely. I have seen one specimen on the Dóm place 31. March, 1946. 4. Passer d. domesticus L. House Sparrow. — I wish to contribute only such data of this very common bird, which will testify on its intrusion into the forests. I have observed one in the edge of a wood over the Tettye. It nests frequently in nest boxes. 5. Passer m. montanus L. Tree Sparrow. — Very frequent on the outskirts of various settlements, chiefly in gardens. Often it occupies the nest boxes even in the woods ; many incubate in those nest boxes that are placed in the Lámpás valley and around the Kozári hunting lodge. 6. Galerida c. eristata L. Crested Lark. — I have observed three specimens beside the highway at Zobák, 7. April, 1946. The datum presumes its nesting in the Mecsek. I. Motacilla a. alba L.White Wagtail.— I havejseen one specimen in the Farkas ditch (Eastern Mecsek), 24, March, 1946 ; and there was another one near Zobák, 7. April. I found it nesting under the eaves of a press house near the wood over Püspöknádasd, 2. June, 1944. Its clutch consisted of three eggs: 8. Tichodroma muraria L. Wall-creeper. — There was a specimen on the fire wall of the school in the Maria street, in Pécs, 18. February, 1946. 9. Muscicapa s. striata Pall. Spotted Fly-catcher. — I found its clutch of four eggs on the southern side of the Misina, 5. June, 1945 ; the nest was on a low, young tree in an oak wood. Then I have observed its nidification in Pécs, 11. July. I have later discovered its nest with five fresh eggs on a pine tree, four meters high above ground, over Patacs in the foot of the Jakabhegy, 29. May, 1947. It is generally more frequent in the parks and gardens the settlements than in the woods. 10. Sylvia c. curruca L. Lesser Whitethroat. — Tamás Vándor collected a clutch of four eggs from the hedge bordering a road between vineyards on the southern slope of the Misina, 28, April, 1947.1 have found its nest many times after the autumnal fall off of leaves on the southern slopes of the Misina, in the hedges of roads among vineyards. II. Turdus m. merula L. Blackbird. — I found a clutch of four eggs around Kárász on the northern side of the Eastern Mecsek, 2. June, 1944 ; then another one of five in an orchards with vines on the southern slopes of the Misina, 5. May, 1945 ; another pair was nesting (clutch of four) at the Lapis refuge, 19. May, 1946 ; and they were nesting also around Pécsbányatelep, 26. May, 1946. Observation data in the forest : six specimens on the slopes of the Tubes, 16. October 1943, six again on the southern side of the Misina, 19. Oct. ; five in the same place, 23. Oct. ; two on the northern side of the Jakabhegy, 5. December ; five here again, 9. January, 1944 ; one under Zobák, 25. March ; one on the southern side of the Misina, 25. January, 1946 ; one again here, 5. Jan. ; three around the Mandulás, 11. Jan. ; seven here again, 16. Jan. ; one again here 20. Jan. ; two on the southern slope of the Misina, 19. March ; six on the southern side of the Jakabhegy, 20. March ; a pair at the Lapis refuge on the southern slope of the Misina, 21. March ; thirty, thirtyfive specimens in the woods on the road from Pécs to Óbánya, 23. March ; five only in the northern part of the Eastern Mecsek, 24. March ; twentyfive on the road Óbánya— Komló, — Mély valley, Pécs, 25. March ; twelve on the southern side of the Jakabhegy, 28. March ; eight east of Pécs on the sothern slopes of the Pécsi Mecsek, 6. April ; fourteen in the Middle Mecsek, 7. April ; sixteen at the foot of the Jakabhegy, 9. April. — Though it is very frequent in the woods of the Mecsek, it occurs in still greater numbers in Pécs and around the city's vineyards ; it is almost a domesticated animal nesting on the trees of the streets and even in the narrow yards closed on all sides by the high buildings of the city. For instance, there was a pair nesting on a two meters high pine tree standing in the middle of the small concrete yard of the house Anna street 5 (I had my flat there then), and there were big, downy youngs in the nest, 10. April, 1946. 12. Hirundo r. rustica L. Swallow. — Four pairs were nesting in a press house on the southern side of the Jakabhegy, 20. May, 1947. It is breeding everywhere but only on the external slopes of the Mountains and in the settlements edged into them. I have seen their nests rarely in gardens and in buildings standing in vineyards. I have never found it around smaller settlements in the forest or foresters' lodges. 13. Delichon u. urbica L. House Martin. — Much more frequent than the former one ; I have found it in the villages Óbánya and Újbánya in bigger numbers.
