the southern side of the Misina, 17. January, 1946 ; two in the same plade, 1. February ; three on the southern side of the Misina-Tubes ridge, and one on the northern part of the Pécsi Mecsek, 2. Febr. ; one on the southern slope of the Misina, 5. Febr. ; three in the same place, 6. Febr. ; one here again, 11. Febr. ; three here again, 16. Febr., one here again, 20. Febr. ; five around Abaliget in the western Mecsek, 10. March ; one on the southern part of the Misina, 21. March ; one near Zobák, Middle Mecsek, 7. April. 11. Dryobates minor hirtorum Brehm. Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. — I have seen one specimen above Cserkút in the Western Mecsek, 28. March, 1946. ; and one above Mecsekszabolcs in the Middle Mecsek, 12. April, 1947! I have not found its nest. It is, therefore, very rare in the Mecsek which may be explained by the fact that the forests consist here of hard-wood trees (oak, beech). 12. Dryobates m. médius L. Middle Spotted Woodpecker. — I have only one sure observation from the Mecsek, it being a datum of nesting also : a bird flew out of its newly made hole (there was no egg in it yet) in the Jánosi forest, on the northern part of the Middle Mecsek, 23. April, 1944. 13. Asio o. otus L. Long-eared Owl. — I have found it only once, proving its nesting, too. I happened on its incubating in the nest of a Common Buzzard in the dense timber on the northern side of the Hármashegy in the Eastern Mecsek, 25. March, 1944. 14. Aquila p. pomarina Brehm. Lesser Spotted Eagle. — A specimen flew over the Zengővár, 20. August, 1948. 15. Buteo b. buteo L.Common Buzzard. — Breeding data: I found three incubated clutches of three eggs in the northern part., of the Middle Mecsek, 22. April, 1944; and two nests, in the Eastern Mecsek, 12. April, 1947: one clutch of three eggs was in the side cri the Réka valley, the other of four eggs on one of the pines in the Püspökszentlászló game reserve. Then there was a fresh clutch of three eggs near Kantavár in the Pécsi Mecsek, 14. April, 1948. — Observation data : I saw four specimens between the Mánfa Road and the Mély valley on the northern side of the Pécsi Mecsek, 3. March, 1946 ; and again four near Abaliget in the Western Mecsek, 10. March. There was one specimen around Zobák, Middle Mecsek 23. March; one in Óbánya, and four on the Nagyhegy in the northern part of the Eastern Mecsek, 24. March ; two around Kisújbánya, two near Püspökszentlászló and one near Zobák, 25. Marsh ; two on the southern side of the Jakabhegy, 28. March ; and one on the northern slopes of the Middle Mecsek,~7. April. It is rather rarely seen in the Western Mecsek. 16. Accipiter g. gentilis L. Goshawk. — It is seen in some localities only, mainly around hunting lodges in the Mecsek ; much more rare than the Buzzard. I found it nesting near Kantavár, 12. April, 1946, and it was breeding there also in 1947. I have observed one on the southern side of the Pécsi Mecsek, 19. March, 1952, and two over the Nagyhegy, 24. March. 17. Milvus m. migrans Bodd. Black Kite. — I saw one specimen on the northern side of the Middle Mecsek, and one on the Mátépart, 7. April, 1946. Cseresnyés found its nesting. 18. Pernis a. apivorus L. Honey-buzzard. — I have not seen this bird myself. Cseresnyés shew me two nests (near Kantavár and over the Mély valley), in which he has found a clutch of three eggs 23. May, 1950, and another with a clutch of two eggs, 2. June, 1950. 19. Circaëtus g. gallicus Gm. Short-toed Eagle. — î have observed one specimen aiound Büdöskút in the Eastern Mecsek, 25. April, 1948. Habitat V. Old Woods 1. Corvus c. corax L. Raven. — I have seen one between Püspökszentlászló and Kisújbánya, 23. March, 1946 ; and found it nesting on the Zengővár, 29. March, 1948. The nest was 28 meters high on a beech tree, containing five eggs. Cseresnyés led me to another raven nest which he found recently on the Zengővár, 22. March, 1951. There were five eggs in it on this day. 2. Coloeus monedula spermologus Vieill. Jackdaw. — I saw nine specimens near Abaliget, 10. March, 1946 ; and a big flock about 200 specimens around the Kövesdi peak in the southern part of the Middle Mecsek, 13. April, 1947. I did not find it nesting. 3. Turdus v. viscivorus L. Measle Thrush. — I did not find it nesting. Cseresnyés collected its clutch of four eggs near Magyarürög at the foot of the Jakabhegy, 18. May, 1947. Then he found another clutch of four in the same place, 13. June, 1949. Data of observation : I have observed ten specimens in a rare, old oak wood, used for pannage, over Magyarürög, 5. December, 1943 ; then there were twentyfive here, 9. January ; there was one at the Dömörkapu (southern Misina), 17. January, 1946 ; and ten at Magyarürög, 20. Jan. ; one at the Mandulás (Southern Misina), 16. February ; one around the Csemetekert, on the northern foot of the Misina, 3. March ; .and ten again at Magyarürög, 20. March. I have seen one not far away from Zobák in the Middle Mecsek, 13. April, 1947 ; and there was one seen under the Árpádtető, Middle Mecsek, 15. April, 1948,
