Diagnosis. — General tint of colouring visibly paler, duskier and yellower. Fur not so downy and thick, as that of the preceding sub­species, but coarser and scarcer. White-bellied foxes predominate. Skull somewhat larger, than that of the central Russian fox. Systematic remarks. — As has been mentioned above, V. v. diluta OGN. represents a doubtless transitive stage to V. v. karagan ERXL. ; on the points of contact of these forms, one undoubtedly meets with specimens, the exact taxonomical position of which it is difficult to establish. Only the typical individuals of the sub-species in question — the pale fox and the typical Karagan — are comparatively easy to define. The geographical distribution has been mentioned above.
