Vulpes vulpes krymea montana and vulpes vulpes krymensis BRAUNER, Memoirs of the Society of Natur, of Novorossia, XL, p. 15—36. 1924. Vulpes vulpes krymea montana OGNEV, The Fauna of the Terrestrial Vertebrates of the gvt. of Voronesh, p. 104. Type locality. — The Crimean mountains. Diagnosis. — Colouring brighter, than that of the foxes of the steppes; fur is more luxurious and better. On the lower part of the back a typical silvery design forming a streaky ripple, handsomely defined against the rather intensive brownish ground. White bellied foxes predominate. The sizes of the skull do not essentially differ from those of the fox of the steppe.* General length of skull of cfcf 139*1— 151-3 (M. 143*3), of 99 128-3—142-2 (M. 134-9); condylo-basal length of skull of cfcf 130 — 146 (M. 137-6), of 99 126-1 — 138 (M. 133-3); zygomatic breadth of cfcf 74—81-9 (M. 76-8), of 99 69—76 (M. 72-6); utmost breadth of skull of cfcf 44-8 — 48-1 (M. 46'3), of 99 42'5— 46*6 (M. 44*6); height of skull of cfcf 47—51 (M. 49), of 99 46-2—50-3 (M. 48*2); length of upper tooth-row of cfcf 62*5—67*3 (M. 65*1), of 99 58-1 65-3 (M. 61-2). Systematic remarks. — Amongst the Crimean foxes of the mountains one meets with extremely bright and intensively colourod specimens. With these may be classed the skin of a cf, procured the 3. XII. 1908 by C. A. MOKRJETSKY in the forestry of the southern coast and belonging to the coll. of the Zoolog. Museum of the Academy of Sciences. * According to BRAUNER, the skulls of the mountain foxes are smaller; this is, however, not confirmed by the material 1 have had under observation (about 40 skulls of the mountainous form).
