Soós, L. ; Schlesch, H.: Notes on some Arctic Mollusca from Greenland

J)r. L. SOOS ANB HANS SCHLKSC.H WBSTJHRIIUND**) records in error Bithynia tentaculata (L.) and Achatina sp. is given by LEACH 11 ), which MORCH identifieri as Volutopsis norvegicus (SKEXGLER). Unio groenlandica FEBUSSAC and Mya (Unio) tenuis (SCHHUTEK) are Unio testudinarius (SFEXGLEE) from Kast india "), and Anodontites radiata VAL. 1S ) is Musculus nigra (GBAY), according to POSSELT '*). The Greenland species, though designated by specifie names, are identical or nearly related to widely distributed palaearctic species. KOBELT 15 ) accordingly regards Greenland as belonging to the palaearetic region. Some American affmity is shown, however, by Limnaea Vahlii MOLLEK. On the present occasion we discuss the following 5 species. 1. Phenacolimax angelicae MOLLEE. This species was first recorded from Greenland under thc nanu^ Helix peUucidus MiiLL., by FABEICIUS I6 ) in 1780. As distinct species it was established by BECK 17 ) without description in 1837, and named so as it is sometimes found on the leaves of Archangelica officinalis HOFEM. BECK 18 ) has characterised it: B Exigua magnitudine appendicis lateratis et numero anfractuum testae minore a Vitrina pellucida distincta". Though it only differs in shell from Phenacolimax pellucidus MTJLL. in iiaving a. somewhat bigger last whorl it is regarded since BECK'S time as a distinet species. According to HESSE 19 ) it is at all events neariy akin to Phenaeolimax pellucidus MULL., yet is, with great probability to be regardet as an independant species. HESSE'S opinion was based upon SIMBOTH'S SO ) figure of the genitalia of this species which secms to show the anterior part of the reproductive organs of a species distinct from Phenacolimax pellucidiis, though SIMEOTH himself says that the genitalia of Phenacolimax angelicae agree „perfectly* with those of Ph. pellueidus figured by hiin as well. SIMBOTH'S figures, however, may serve as a basis of positive decision all the less sinee his figivre of thc genital apparatus of Phenaeolimax pellucidus is, on the one hand, false, and that of Ph. angelicae shows the genitalia of a young specimen, on the other.
