DÉNES GABLER AND ANDRÁS MÁRTON: Head-Pots in the Antiquities Collection

2 MODELLING STAMPS FORA LAGYNOS. SCALE 1:1 over. 2 The neck was likewise made in two separate moulds, and attached to the body. 3 A strap handle runs up from the shoulder of the vase to the nape of the head. It was attached last, after the smoothing of the join and the modelling of the head. In the middle of the narrow ring base, a rosette of ten petals in a concentric circle. On the lower part of the vase, twenty-one tongue-shaped leaves widening toward the top in imitation of metal tableware. On the upper part of the body, a stylised garland of leaves and berries between two relief lines. The human face has strongly grotesque features: a big nose, wide empty eyes, and slightly protruding ears. Hair modelled freehand with rough punched details after the head was removed from the mould. 2. WINE-JUG IN THE SHAPE OF A FEMALE HEAD (LAGOENA) 4 (FIG. 3) Strap handle attached last to body of vase. The finely modelled face was matrix-moulded separately from the rest of the head: the join of the two pieces is visible from the mouth to the foot. Short horizontal line on neck. On the front, the hair that frames the schematic face divides into several regular spiral locks, the ends of which are combed in neat curves over the brow. At the centre, the carefully ordered locks fall into a shape like an amazon shield. The eyebrows are long, arched, and roughly leaf-shaped. The nape covered by corkscrew-shaped locks of hair. The hair is similar but not identical on the two sides. The back part was probably made not from the intended mould (perhaps damaged), but from another, similar one. This explains also why the crown of leaves and concentric circles over the brow does not continue on to the back of the head. The nose is snub, the ear-holes were marked after removal from the mould. On the face, the eyebrows, hair, and the face itself were probably retouched after modelling.
