3 WINE JUG REPRESENTING A WOMAN'S HEAD. EROM ASIA Ml NOR The chin is strong and angular. The head is crowned by a convex, tapering spout. The bot­tom of the base is flat and smooth. There is damage to the chin, probably the result of inclu­sions in the clay falling out before firing. The damaged part is also covered by the slip. 3. WINE-JUG IN THE SHAPE OF A YOUNG MALE HEAD 5 (FIG. 4) Figure jug in the shape of a young male head with curly hair. Base flat and smooth; funnel­shaped spout. Clay colour red (Munsell 10R 5/8). Clay and slip almost identical in colour; the latter (Munsell 10R 5/6) matte and in places almost entirely lost. Arched strap handle from back of head to spout. The vase was made in four pieces. The two halves of the body were made in separate moulds and joined while leather-hard. The join was afterwards smoothed over. The funnel spout, which carries a name-stamp, was then attached to the body; and the handle finally attached. On the neck part three oblique lines rising out of the surface like a collar. The youth's hard facial features are finely made: the mouth with its firmly closed lips gives an impression of strictness; the eyes are open wide; the hair ornamentally styled. Ml this, plus the linearity of certain features and the roughly oval shape of the face are strongly rem­iniscent of stylising tendencies in the art of the early Constantinian period. 6 The brow part is low, and the face is almost expressionless in the absence of any differentiated internal features. The pupil and iris of the eye give a blank, staring impression. The locks of the hair, which fall in close ringlets of negroid [?] type, were added after moulding, in the à la barbotine (or "trailed slip") technique.
