JUDIT LEBEGYEV - ANDRÁS MÁRTON: Early Cycladic Objects in the Collection of Classical Antiquities
possible that they are the remains of earlier paint. Vertical wavy lines protruding írom the surface can be seen on both sides of the nose, strongly damaged by polishing. However, the trapezoid pattern under the nose that was formerly considered to be paint is, in fact, the part of the surface that was not polished, and is covered with the original patina. On the back of the head there is an area lighter in colour than its surroundings, running down to the nape of the neck and narrowing in a curve on both sides. Its borders protrude slightly from the surface, (fig. 11). On both sides of the head there are vertical wavy lines projecting from the surface (one on the right side, two on the left) (figs. 10, 13). Ph. Zapheiropoulou claimed that the figure in Budapest can be attributed to the same hand as a figure kept in the Naxos Museum; P. GetzGentle —who was able to examine the figure only through photograph, — also considers conceivable that the two figures were made by the same master, yet because of differences in style and quality, definitely at different stages of his life. 1- Although the two pieces are similar in shaping (flat, asymmetric shape, irregular grooves), they differ in proportions, the execution of the grooves, and some details in form (the lyre-shaped head of the figure from Naxos is in proportion to its body; the neck, legs, and feet are narrower, the pubic triangle is indicated with incision, but the spine is not: the incisions are broader and shallower). In our view, the differences between the two figures suggest not different stages of one master's career, but much rather two separate masters. 13 PR E \ 10US R ECONSTR U CT I ON OF THF. WEINBERG I') 70 FOLDED-ARM FEMALE FIGURE (FIGS. 14-17) 13 The head and neck of the figure of greyish fine-grained marble have broken off, and its right foot has been rejoined. The tip of the right shoulder is slightly chipped, and scratches can be seen on the back. The figure is shaped flat, and its legs are slightly bent. The neckline is indicated with a V-shaped groove on the back, which is missing on the front, but the broken surface suggests a curved groove. The shoulders are broad and sloping. The breasts placed far from each other are hardly protruding from the surface. The grooves separating the upper arms from the body intersect the lines of the forearms as thin incisions. Below the upper line of both forearms thin parallel incisions are visible. 14 The fingers are not marked. The deep grooves indicating the hip run to the back of the figure asymmetrically." Thin, deep grooves indicate the broad pubic triangle, and the lines of the knees and ankles. Below and above the groove of the right knee,
