JUDIT LEBEGYEV - ANDRÁS MÁRTON: Early Cycladic Objects in the Collection of Classical Antiquities

thin, single incisions can be seen, which run parallel. Broad V-shaped grooves separate the two legs on front and on the back. The groove on the back continues in the line of the spine. The toes are marked by four grooved lines running up high on both feet. The surface of the figure must have been treated with acid, which removed the original patina of the marble. White encrustation can be noticed in the long incisions of the toes, in the groove separating the legs, and on the soles of the feet. The figure has been placed in the late group of the Spedos type. 16 However, it displays the characteristics of both Spedos and Dokathismata types. The representation of the bent legs and the back of the knees with shallow grooves, and the indication of the neckline with a curve on the front and a Vshape on the back are indeed Spedos features. On the other hand, the flat body, the broad, sloping shoulders, the breasts placed far from each other, and the lavishly incised parts are characteristic of the Dokathismata variant. Therefore, this piece, just as its analogy in the Goulandris Museum, cannot be classified as either of the two types. It bears some features of both the Spedos and the Dokathismata types. 1 No traces of paint could be detected on the figure. 14-17
