Map of Volterra's territory in the Etruscan period copper and mercury mines; • = localities with material from 3rd century BC; Q = localities with material in general. harbour and commercial centre of Livorno ; Volterra's ancient harbour at Vada lies only 8 km away. Situated in the mining district north of the river Cecina, Terriccio was marked both as a copper mine and an Etruscan find spot on a map published by E. Fiumi in 1961 and in 1968.

7 and it does not appear on more recent maps that record Etruscan mining activities. Here the Volterran area is represented by the copper mines of Miemo, Camporbiano, Montecatini Val di Cecina and Montaione.
