consisted of the teaching of three subjects: the elements of human biology, hygiene and Sewedish gymnastics. Roth fought for the introduction of these subjects into the curriculum of the elementary schools and it was due to him that in 1878 Swedish gymnastics was officially introduced into girls' schools in London. Roth never tired of publicising his views. He published books, articles, gave lectures at international congresses and displayed aids to healthier living at international exhibitions. As part of his sanitary programme, Roth founded the Ladies Sanitary Association and the Society for the Prevention of Blindness. There can be no doubt that these organisations performed necessary and useful work.
