Kühne, D. és mtsai. : Defekt von Femur und Fibula mit Amélie, Peromelie oder ulnaren Strahldefektes der Arme. Ein Syndrom. Humangenetik, (1967), 244. Spencer, R.: Extrophia splanchnica (exstrophy of the cloaca) Surgery, (1965), 571. Summary Aldrovandi's Monstrorum História (The History of Congenital Defects) published in 1642 in Bologna is among the rare books at the Library of Kalocsa Cathedral. This work has not been scientifically evaluated so far. The author, Ulysses Aldrovandi (1522—1605) was one of the most famous and most accomplished scientists of his time. He travelled a lot in order to study nature, taking draftsmen and engravers along with him to make illustrations of what he saw on his trips, he left behind several manuscripts which were later published, like Monstrorum História. This work is 748 pages long, contains an index and a list of corrections. The essay gives a detailed description of the book itself and of the birth defects described in it. The authors of the essay came to the conclusion that Aldrovandi's views were determined by catholic ideology, although, its scolastic approach is mingled with knowledge of classical Greek origin. Monstrorum História reflects the level of wisdom of the time. E. CZEIZEL, M. D, C. Sc. Public Health Institute of Hungary. H-1966 Budapest IX., Gyáli út 2—6. A SIBELKA PERLEBERG, EC. D.
