children died in our community from smallpox in two months, many were badly disfigured although, if inoculated, the sickness would not have gained hold upon them and many would have been spared suffering. At this juncture numerous parents were sorry to have acted in this way, many wanted to have their children vaccinated and some even remonstrated with the Church for not having given them due information from the pulpit about the salutary effect of inoculation. However, it was too late, the seed of smallpox was lost. Bailiff Imre Arany, Esq. had his daughter, Theresia vaccinated in Berénke in 1804 and thus we got again the precious seed. From this child engineer Gábor Major, Esq. had his girl Judith, 7 months old, vaccinated on Aug. 16. The operation was successfully performed by myself. Her smallpox having attained its climax, I was able to vaccinate from her on Aug. 26. Susanna, the daughter of Samu Pető and the 5 months old son of Mihály Takáts, Sándor, 5 months old. From him I inoculated on Sept. 4. Mihály Gerő's daughter Susanna, the girl of the boot-maker András Szabó and the boy of Klára Császi, Pista. It happened, however, that the boy of Mihály Takáts, Sándor, starting his smallpox nicely, took to rubbing it, consequently very little remained of the moisture which serves as vaccine and the remainder was probably not up to the mark. I was not very hopeful about this vaccine and inoculated those mentioned above, as well as the grandchild of Notary István Ferenczi, son of Peter Nagy, István rather experimentally. In the year 1806 the smallpox with blisters started anew in our community, Pista Császi and the grandchild of the Notary both fell sick, though not as badly as many other children. Many people were of opinion that beneficial smallpox does not prevent those vaccinated from getting the other variety. Indeed, in the year 1806 Mr. Imre Arany who was bailiff in 1804 and is now steward, had a little girl aged about 6 months, Julianna, vaccinated in Berénke and through her this kind of smallpox was again imported. From her were vaccinated the following:
