tors and philosophers who were apt to reason scientifically were searching for the real, materialistic bases since early times. This lead them perforce to investigations about the origin and the development of living things, in the first place human beings. The conditions for such researches being not yet given, many of the research-workers 'ost themselves in theories and hypotheses. There were those who still believed in superstitions and the theory of divine providence, and those who were able to draw correct conclusions out of their scientific observations and could, therefore, point out the causes of congenital malformation. Patnological embryology was rapidly developing. Many experiments made in this field are even to-day fundamental. The diagnosis of the pathogenesis was hindered by the fact well-known to-day that several pathogenetical causes are at work. Even in ancient times many scientists were looking for the one, conclusive factor. Our predecessors made many observations which are still valid and may be of use in our future researches.
