MÁTYÁS SZABÓ Nationality and identity Immigrants arriving in their new homes face very often a radically different social, political, economic, cultural contexts in many respects. One of the domains it becomes apparent is the question of identity. It may involves both the national and/or ethnic identity in their former home and the new alternative provided by their new destination. This paper examines the background of persons who immigrated from Hungary to Sweden in the second half of the 20th century. It addresses issues of immigration experince, motivations to obtain citizenship in Sweden and the changing relationship with Hungary. The results will then be compared to that of three other groups from Chile, Turkey and Iran. I. táblázat.
