Some of the most virulent debate concentrated on the responsibility of the French head coach, and the French in general, for the poor showing of Cameroon. The debate went well beyond soccer and showed how in part by demanding a local coach Cameroonians express nationalist sentiments, and in part provide a criticism of Cameroon's colonial past and postcolonial present by seeing the French coach as someone, who by virtue of being French, a representative of the former colonizer, could not possibly have wanted to allow Cameroon to succeed.
