grew in respect of economy, too. It was proven that in case of good organization and management the freight and passenger traffic on the road may be a profitable venture. The trucks belonging to the stock of the co-operative have been built by MÁVAG and by the Rába Hungarian Wagon and Machine Factory. The technical condition of the trucks was rigorously checked, consequently only a small percentage of them was withdrawn from service and put in repair. The good condition of the trucks was the result of the fact that the manifacurers expanded their repair networks and modernized their provincial contractual repair facilities. The members of the co-operative were provided with significant allowances. Beside the inner freight traffic the organization of the transport of the Hungarian agriculture products abroad became more and more urgent. In the issue of February 1937 of the Motor Vehicle Gazette was published the first Hungarian source of law dealing with the practical part of the question, as the filling up of the freight-bill, the necessity of the driver's documents, the custom guarantee, the transport charges and the arrangements in case of an accident. Beside the freight organization the co-operative was looking after the legal protection of the members, too, and furthermore established a relief fund. Owing to the rational, planned work of the co-operative the garages of the country-wide network were continuously developed and the number of the local offices was increased. The top in the life and operation of MATEOSZ was the year of 1937 in respect of traffic organization and international freight transport. The coming years passed in the spirit of preparation for the 2nd World War. Dr. László Eperjesi: Hungarian-Rumanian Railway Connections In The Dualistic Era (1867-1891), I. The Hungarian Parliament decided by its resolution of the 4th December 1868 unambiguously the transport policy of the government concerning the main direction of the international railway connection to the east. The Hungarian government initiated negotiations with Rumania in 1869 in the matter of the railway connections. It turned out that the interests of Hungary and Rumania were different. The frustration of the Hungarian-Rumanian interstate contract concerning the railway traffic did not change the transport policy of the Hungarian government. On the basis of the initiative of Bucuresti the Hungarian and the Rumanian governments negotiated again at the end of 1873 in the matter of the railway connections. In the agreement of 31st May 1974 the two governments assumed an obligation to construct and to put into service the railway lines TemesvárOrsova-Verciorova-Turnu Severin and Brasso-Tömös-Predeal-Ploesti within 4 years, beginning from the 17th August 1874. The railway connections between Hungary and Rumania have been completed, although with a small delay. After the historical overview of the theme the Author discloses in Appendix 1 the work "Hungary's Railway network" of the Hungarian royal minister for public works and transport, count Imre Mikó. Dr. Mihály Krámli: Contributions To The History Of The Austro-Hungarian Shipping On The Danube With Special Regard To The Consequences Of Rumania's Entering Into War, 1917. The Shipping Group of the Central Transport Management (KSZV) established by the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 1914, after the outbreak of the World War was set up at the end of 1915. The main task of this organization was to arrange the transport of grain from Rumania on water-way. In his study the Author outlines the activity of the Shipping Group of KSZV. The former neutral Rumania entered the war on the side of the Allies in August 1916. The stopping of grain import from Rumania had a deterriorating effect upon the Central Powers, but mainly upon Austria. In interest of assuring the Rumanian economic resources the Central Powers had decided the occupation of Rumania, which was carried out under German leadership by December 1916. During the military operations the shipping on the lower part of the Danube was suspended. 307
