parachuting. The parachuting has developed similarly to the aviation and the aircrafts. According to our knowledge Leonardo da Vinci sketched out the projects of the "falling umbrella". The thought of the "flying umbrella" had been sugested more than 400 years ago by Ferenc Verancsicswho was of Hungarian origin. The parachute made by him was the first construction in the world intended to realize the flying by free "floating". The Author describes the long way which resulted in the impact-air-pressure "quilt" and the "tandem" umbrellas applied in our days. The latter one can carry a second person, too. The study informs on the official regulation, which determines the parachute as an aeronautic vehicle. The regular use of the parachute had been introduced in the last years of World Was I and the "parachuting as a branch of military service" was established in 1938 in Hungary. The civil and sports parachuting existed beside the military parachuting already before the outbreak of World War II. From the study we can learn that after World War II the sports and civil parachuting continued at the Hungarian National Defence Association, or rather at its predecessors having changed their names several times. 381
