in the painting of girls of the middle-class, unrestricted to the court circles. Chang Yen gives in his three album-paintings such beauties as dressed modestly, with delicate builds, egg-shape faces, long and narrow eyes and cherry-like mouths. All three pictures are carefully drawn with a soft, sensitive brush. We can note the shading of their dresses and faces. The first one (Jig. 3) illustrates two female figures. The one on the right is in pale green with a floating red girdle. The folds and borders of her robe are drawn wit thin strokes which create the impression of soft textile. In lier right hand is a fan, and in her left one a leaved flower. The other figure is composed in the same way. Fig. •>. Chang Yen. \\ oman beauties
