HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM — MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Unger, Edmund: A Recently Discovered Persian Manuscript from the 14th Century
Fig. 2. Although the subject matter is similar I have found little affinity between the manuscript and the Kitab al-Bulham. The latter is painted in a completely different style, if I may say it is more crude. It has not got the rich warm colouring of the Manuscript, and it lacks completely gold. On the other hand it is in many ways more advanced. It shows the sitting arrangement of the figures rather adroitly and also takes advantage of the sky and clouds. Another difference is that on the predella of the Kitab al-Bulham there are three figures, where five on our Manuscript. As far as the Aja'ib al-Makhluqat is concerned there is a greater similarity of style particularly with three miniatures. Among them the man with the monkey, the tree of Wague and the preparation of the pepper. The problem of movement of the figures on these is better solved than on our manuscript, but the general background, the treatment of flowers, trees etc. is similar. On the other hand the colours are more sombre and it lacks the gold as well.
