HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM — MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Unger, Edmund: A Recently Discovered Persian Manuscript from the 14th Century

Fig. 3. Fig. 4. One of the main differences to me between our Manuscript and the Kitab al-Bulham and the Aja'ib al-Makhlaqat is, that our Manuscript has something faintly reminiscent of the Mesopotamian style. The ample use of gold, the figures, the gold halo around their heads (which incidentally it is not quite a Mesopotamian halo because there is an inner ring) evokes an earlier period than the Bodleian or the Paris manuscripts. It is this strange combination, the advanced naturalistic flowers and tree designs and the use of rich colours on the one hand and the faint Mesopotamian style of the figures and objects on the other hand which renders this Manuscript so interesting. It seems to be the result of a period when the two different cross currents met and both of them left their mark on the Manuscript.
