HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM - MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Horváth, Tibor: Reports on the Activities of the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Eastern Asiatic Arts in 1965-1966

SOME OF OUR NEW ACQUISITIONS Pig. 1. China: Immortal leaning on a he-goat. Jade carving. 17 th Century. The Immortal is of the same height as the kneeling animal. This peculiar proportion was obviously determined by the size of the stone and the closeness of the composition. As for the Immortal, his head is also dominant. It is big, out of all proportion in relation to his body. Resting his right elbow on the animal, he strokes his beard with his right hand. In the left hand he holds a staff, with a gourd-bottle at its end, from which a long tassel is hanging down. On the left sleeve of his robe a bat is carved. The horn of the he-goat bends backwards, with more branches, actually antlers. In its mouth linchi. The head of the he-goat is pinkish grey, that of the Immortal light sage green. The leg of the goat, the gourd and the tassel dark brownish grey. Fine carving. The piece has lost some of its brilliance in use. Height: 5.6 cm., width: 7.5 cm. Inventory number: 66.65. T. H.
