HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM - MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Horváth, Tibor: Reports on the Activities of the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Eastern Asiatic Arts in 1965-1966

Fig. 2. Shou-tai (animal-belt) bronze mirror. Relatively email, but tall, transpierced central knob of a hemispherical form. Around it there is a recessed ring, and a projecting circular line. In the middle zone there are four small nipples on a flat circular ground. Three of them are pointed, conical, but the fourth one is flat. Beyond the three nipples of the same shape, on the side of the rim, there are fine small projecting hatches. Among the nipples, the same fantastic animal recurs four times: a dragon turning its head downwards and backwards. On its body there are thin lines. The dragons are represented in a stylized and dynamic way. The outer zone consists of three stripes: the inner one of a comb-toothed shape, the middle and the outer ones are of zig-zag, and of saw-toothed pattei'ns, respectively. The projecting narrow rim is ending above in a sharp angle and its cross-section is triangular. The reflecting side bulges. The surface of the mirror is a lustrous black, lacquer-like, "hei ch'i ku". It is a piece of excellent moulding and make. At its rim there is a small repair. Diameter: 10.2 cm., height: 1 cm. Inventory number: 66.54. L. F. Fig. 3. China: Kuan-yin. Ivory statuette. 12-1 II th century. Her head turns slightly to the right side. The hair at the back is rolled up, tied round and arranged in chignons. The front of the chignon is decorated with a diadem. Its string of pearls hangs at both sides to the shoulders. Her separately set right hand is missing. The left hand adheres closely to the body, raising her gown. The unusual length of her forefinger and little finger is remarkable. The gown, with its highly-placed girdle lengthens the figure, which is moreover elongated, almost of Gothic character. Under the long gown wc can see the petticoat reaching to the ground. The stole, flung over the shoulder, also reaches to the ground. Excepting the painted black hair, the statuette was first coated with reddish brown lacquer, then by lacquer mixed with gold dust. (All but the bottom of the. statuette, which was carved rather crudely. On its right side there is a hole, made obviously for setting up.) On the face, from the middle of the forehead to the edge of the
