"REST IN PEACE - THE CASUALTIES OF THE ROYAL HUNGARIAN ARMY IN WORLD WAR II" A TEMPORARY EXHIBITION FROM THE DOCUMENTS OF THE CENTRAL ARCHIVES For nearly 45 years after the lost world war, no unbiased military historical works were published on Hungary's participation and the Royal Hungarian Army's casualties in World War II. Since the political changes, however, several books and studies have been available treating the military history of the period; war memorials have been raised all over the country, and people are free to commemorate their relatives that were killed in action or died in captivity during and after World War II. The remainder of the casualty files from World War II are preserved in the Central Archives, a branch of the Military History Institute and Museum. Thus, it is the staff of the Central Archives that carries out so-called individual searches, as there are many people 60 years after World War II that would like to find out what happened to their loved ones. In 2001-2002, a highly successful temporary exhibition titled "Rest in Peace", based on the casualty documents preserved in the Central Archives, was on view in the Military History Museum. Following the idea, travelling shows have also been organised in the countryside from 2003 onwards, with the specific aim of displaying the casualty files, pictures and bequests of the fallen sons of the settlements where the exhibitions take place. From the material of the exhibitions, visitors may learn about the various types of casualty files, the present conditions of Hungarian war graves, and they also get to know that in World War II the last honours were always paid to the fallen soldiers and forced labourers depending on the operational situation. We strongly hope that this activity of the Central Archives and other branches of the Military History Institute and Museum contributes to keeping the memory of the forgotten heroes alive, so that wreaths shall be laid at the World War II memorials, and the war graves of the Hungarian heroes shall be taken care of in the countryside too.
