The booklet contains notes regarding their household from September 1917 to September 1921. The diary dates back to the time when the family lived in Üllő, Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun County. The head and provider of the family, state railway official Ferenc Zahumenszky, was the head of the Hungarian State Railways' ticket office. When the oldest of the five children was killed in action in 1915, the family shrunk to six members. Subsequent to that, their everyday life was determined by the office in Budapest and their home in the country. Although the exact amount of the father's monthly salary is not indicated in the diary, even the incomplete records suggest that the family lived rather modestly, running the household on a tight budget. There was no opportunity for them to employ any domestic servants. Their free time activity too was characterised by moderation, their expenses by economy and mending. And yet it can be claimed that the father provided optimal living conditions to his family, which is documented by the adequate and varied nourishment, the education of the little girl and the entertainment facilities. The source contributes to the research of wartime living at the beginning of the 20th century.
