ELŐSZÓ

PREFACE With the assistance of the National Scientific Research Fund in 1987 research was launched to compile geographically detailed data on nationality (mother tongue) and religion for the territory of historic Hungary. (It was a multi-purpose research but here only these themes are mentioned.) The analytic exploration of nationality data of the historic Hungary could start. The distribution by nationality and mother tongue of the localities and regions was examined on the basis of population data of Hungary and of the neighboring countries. Later it was completed by researching data of religion. Within the framework of the series, a few volumes were published, which do not belong closely to the series but are important from the point of view of the theme. The nationality (mother tongue) data were published in 8 volumes comprising 3263 pages. The edition of the volumes entitled „The nationality (mother tongue) data of the localities of Hungary (1880—1949)" in about 1100 pages is still to come. The series concerning nationality (mother tongue) will be complete then. The volumes containing religion data were published in 6 volumes and 2755 pages including this present volume entitled „Religion data of the localities of Transylvania (1880—1941)". From this series the volume entitled „Religion data of the localities of Burgenland" is still left which presumably will be published in 260 pages, in 2002. The religion series will be completed with that. In the case of the nationality (mother tongue) series, the order of the régiónál publications was different. At this series the edition of the volume concerning the present territory of Hungary preceded the volumes of the territorial parts of historic Hungary. The order of the territorial parts was alsó different: while searching and compiling nationality data of the Southern part of Hungary, we found such processing tables and other statistical data sources of which we could compile religion data as well. We decided that this volume be the first in this series. The methodological summary of the volume provides a detailed list of the sources. Alsó it gives information on how we could manage to achieve the comparability of the data at locality level with those of the volume containing mother tongue data published earlier. In the 9
