1990 POPULATION CENSUS Detailed data based on a 2 per cent representative sample (1992)

I. REVIEW OF THE DATA - A/ Main characteristics of the population

The majority of women, having terminated the generál school, continue to learn in grammar schools or in such specialized secondary schools which give qualifications in the traditional female professions, while men continue to learn in apprentice schools in a greater proportion than women. Of females aged 18-19 years, 38 per cent have a secondary school-leaving certificate whereas the respective proportion of males is only 23 per cent. As a result of this process, the difference in the secondary educational level to the benefit of the males has already equalized: by now, 30 per cent of both the 18 year old and older males and females have a secondary school-leaving certificate, as against the 18 and 13 per cent, respectively, in 1970. 13. At present, 9 per cent of the 25 year old and older population have third-level education. The value of this indicator is over 10 per cent in all age-groups under 50 years, among the more aged the respective proportion decreases gradually and among the 75 year old and older persons it is already only 3 per cent. Of the 25 year old and older population, each ninth male and each thirteenth female have third level education. While among the males under 65 years the share of those having completed a third-level school is over 10 per cent in all age-groups, among the females a similar proportion can be observed only in the 44 year old and younger age-groups. Among those aged 25-34 years, females have third-level education in a greater proportion (15 per cent) than males (11 per cent). 7 per cent of the 70 year old and older men and scarcely more than 1 per cent of the women of this age have third-level education, the latter almost exclusively in education-related professions. 14.
