I. REVIEW OF THE DATA - A/ Main characteristics of the population

11. Fertility of married women of propagative age, by age group Year Number of children per 100 married women aged: Year 15-19 20-24 25-29 30-39 40-49 15-49 years 1970 45 90 143 192 221 176 1980 59 106 158 191 200 172 1990 57 97 160 200 200 181 Educational attainment During the past ten years, the educational attainment of the population continued to increase. Parallelly with the growth in the number and proportion of persons having completed third-level and secondary schools, the number of persons having not even completed 8 grades of the primary school and their proportion within the population decreased. . Since 1980 over one and a half million persons have completed general school. Among them, of the more aged 50 thousand persons at the evening or correspondence courses. In the 1980s, 95-96 per cent of those emerging from school-age completed the 8th grade of general school, nevertheless, of the 15-59 year old more than half a million (8.5 per cent) did not achieve this educational attainment. The proportion of those having completed the 8th grade of the general school is especially low (75 per cent) among the 50-59 year old population, and at present it is not probable that they will continue to learn in a great number at evening or correspondence courses. Altogether, among the 15 year old and older males, the share of those with a general school or higher educational attainment, grew from 71 per cent to 83 per cent and, among the females of the same age, from 62 per cent to 74 per cent. 12. Of them, the proportion of persons having obtained a certificate of apprentice school, grew by 23 per cent, and that of those having completed a secondary school by 19 per cent. At present, already 30 per cent of the 18 year old and older population have at least a completed secondary school attainment, as against 23 per cent in 1980. It is characteristic of the great development that in 1949 the value of this indicator was only 6 per cent. By now, 31 per cent of those aged 18-19 years and more than two fifths of those aged 20-44 years have completed a secondary school. A part of the latter terminated their secondary school studies after the age of 19 years. In the data of the more aged, the earlier educational attainment is reflected (e.g. only 13 per cent of the 60 year old and older population have a secondary school-leaving certificate) . 11
