X. THE HOUSING SITUATION, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE POPULATION'S HOUSING CONDITIONS

In 110 thousand occupied dwellings - 3 percent of all dwellings - were used by subtenants or night-lodgers too, 194 thousand occupants - 2 percent of all occupants - were subtenant or night­lodger at the beginning of 1980. In 1980 74 percent of the occupied flats were privately owned, and 26 percent state owned. 85 percent of the privately owned flats were in family houses, 8 percent were in blocks of free hold flats, and 7 percent were cooperative flats. The proportion of cooperative and free hold flats grew threefold, their number grew more than three-and-a-half-fold in the seventies. The number of the former rose from 49 thousand to 173 thou­sand, the number of the later from 58 thousand to 210 thousand. The number of privately owned flats in family house grew to a lesser extent and their proportion decreased in the seventies. The number of dwellings with individual sewage tank rose more than three-fold. The facilities of occupied dwellings is different by size groups, larger dwellings are consider­ably better equipped than smaller ones.
