1970 HUNGARIAN CENSUS OF POPULATION Information on the data collection and processing (1977)

I. THE COMPREHENSIVE REWIEV OF THE DATA COLLECTION AND PROCESSING - 8. The electronic data processing of the census of 1970

66 Data output (publication) Central Statistical Office Elektronic computer ICT 1904 (january ist, 1969.) Data input 1 I Data output on paper tape of 5-8 channels. Punching performance: 110 signals/sec. Line printer no. I. • ii Line printer no. IL The performance of both printers is identical It prints lines of 160 letters; to each of them one of the 64 signals may be printed The performance depends on the scale-length of the signals; - when using 49 signals belonging to the same range, the performance is 1 350 lines/ min. - when using 64 signals: 1 100 lines/min. CENTRAL UNIT In the core store maximum 32 768 words are to be stored - 1 word = 25 bits; 24+1 parity check bits (bit=binary digit) - the signal-input to 1 word amounts to 4 (out of the 54 being at disposal or 5 (decimal digits) - the greatest integer to be stored: „4 with simple word length: 16 777 215 (2 -1) with double word length: 140 737 488 355 327 (2 2 7-l) - number of the operations per sec. with simple word length: addition/subtraction 142 000 multiplication 25 000 division 23 000 jump 200 000 - number of concurrent programmes 4 (to each main programme 2 subprogrammes may be connected) - number of channels by means of which peripheral equipments may be connected with the central unit: generali (slow) 18 quick 5 Magnetic tape units Linked with two quick channels: two units (2 reels). The magnetic tape generally used is 2 400 feet long (720 m) Packing density 556 signals/inch or 200 signals/inch To be stored on a real: - with the density of 556 signals: 12 millions of signals (6 bits+parity) - with the density of 200 signals: 5 millions of signals (5 bits+parity) Reading time of a tape: about 6-8 min. Reeling up a tape: about 3-8 min. Reading and interpretation may take place in one direction only. During the interpretation schecking also may take place Reading velocity: 41 700 signals/sec. Fig. 3. • , • I Paper tape reader It may work with a paper tape of 3-8 shannels. Reading velocity: 1 000 signals/sec. J • 1 Card reader no. I. Reading vélocity: 900 cards/min. (suitable for the reading of cards punched according to the codes of the binary system). Card reader no. II. Reading velocity: 300 cards/min.
