(1991) FLAG RESTORATION - THE PROBLEMS OF RE-RESTORATION The study is dealing with the possibilities of re-restoration of three flags, which were originally conserved between 1978-1980. The owner the Janus Pannonius Museum in Pécs. All of the three flags are single sheet, twofolded type, painted on both sides with oil binding media. Gilding, arms of Hungary, Madonna and inscriptions can be found on the sides. The condition of the objects made necessary the intervention previous restoration and because of storage circumstances. The previous restorer used synthetic polymer in case of the three flags. According to the investigation results, the consolidating material was acryl type. On the three flags the area of the impregnated parts were different. On the oil paintings and gildings white precipitations, on the silk dark patches can be found. These parts are hard and fragile. The new interventions were done in 1997 by the author, aimed at the removal of the synthetic polymer. On the flag I. the adhesive can be found on the oil painted part and the gilding. From the solvents of the acrylics metyl-ethyl-ketone was used for the removal of the white layer. After cleaning of the whole surface the next step was the conservation. The side of the flag II. (with the arms of Hungary) was covered with artificial silk in 1978. The incomplete flag was fixed to the lining material by sewing. The removal of the acrylics from the oil painted surface and from the inscription fragments was done by 1:1 mixture of methyl-ethyl ketone-ethyl cellosolve. From the silk beeing too fragile the solution of the synthetics were impossible. The new reinforcing of the flag can be made by lining. On the flag III. the gilded surfaces were impregnated by the previous restorer similarly as in case of the 2nd one. The solvent mixture used for the removal of thie layer was the same as for the 2nd one. From the silk the removal of acrylics are impossible. The animal glue layer under gilding is too thick, it causes another problem in course of conservation. The study is dealing with a part of the flag or banner conservation which raising the problems of re-restoration in dependence of the conservation technology and storage.
