POSSIBILITIES IN RESTORING HEAVILY DAMAGED PARCHMENT CODICES Abstracts: The ’’Corvina Program” got underway in the Restoration Laboratory of the National Széchényi Library in Budapest in 1982. Its aim was the conservation of heavily damaged medieval parchment codices that previously had been considered irretrievable. The majority of these codices, including significant numbers from the Bibliotheca Corviniana, belong to the Collections of the University Library in Budapest. Some similarly damaged volumes are owned by the National Széchényi Library itself. The manuscripts were nearly destroyed by biological and physical agents during the approximately 350 years they spent in Turkey. The damage presumably occurred due to inappropriate storage conditions. Rescue work required broad cooperation between experts. First, the materials of the codices were made from as well as the nature of the damage involved had to be thoroughly investigated. This was followed by the planning of successful, risk free methods of restoration and conservation. Finally, these, as well as the auxiliary materials designated for use were subjected to thorough physical and chemical screening and testing in order to prevent additional damage to the manuscripts. During this research and development work new procedures had to be devised such as the fixing of the paint and gilding applied to these manuscripts as well as the single stage softening, strenghtening and disinfecting of weakened parchment. The most significant innovation was the development of "parchment casting", a new method used in the completion and reinforcement of parchments. Restorers developed numerous versions of the basic procedure during the course of several years of work. The description of these methods is provided by the author.
