RESTORATION OF A CHEST OF THE WEAVER’S GUILD MADE IN 1827 Abstracts: The chest of the weavers’ guild, owned by the Museum of Sopron was made of pine wood with dove-tailed joints. Its decoration is simple: the decorating templets create squares, at their meeting points dcscs, stylized rosettas. On the flat top of the chest one bigger disc can be seen. The chest is blue, and the discs are red. On the fo- ront there is a painted number: 1827. It might mean the date of production of the chest. In the middle there is a brass key-plate, and on its sides the iron handles. On the inner side of the chest-lid and on the outside of the back there are nicely made iron hoops. In the chest the documents, money and treansures of the guild were kept. It came to the restorer in a shabby, completed and repainted condition. The test-fields and the material tests showed that it was repaired probaby twice. The basic blue was repainted once, and the decorations twice. (With exeption to pieces, which were chenged.) The medium of the original paint-layer and of the repaintings was oil, so the cleaning could have been made only in a mechanical way. The metallic part of the chest were strongly corroded, these were cleaned with chemicals (solution of Na-hexametaphosphate and Ferropassit) mechanically. The passivation was made by using tannic-acid and rifle-grease. The completions were made as the chest itself, of deal-wood and their fixing wzs made using wood-dowels. After making the chalk grounding, which was polished on to the original layer and vernishing, the retouch was made by at the same time they can be distinguished.
