Iparművészeti tárgyak restaurálásáról - Pfeiffer Tibor: Alpakka berakású fa gyertyatartó restaurálása

reach the desired circumference dimensions. The dismounted metal inlays were cleaned, after tempering, in a bath of diluted sulphuric acid. The detached pieces were sticked on, in case of the metal fittings as well as the veneers, by colette. The completion of the foliation wound around the stem was possible after the reconstruction of the whole motive only. For this, we had the pair of the candlestick with the mirror image of the motive. The completion of the missing veneer was supplied from material of the same quality and fibre direction. The gaps between the metal parts and the veneer were filled, similar to the original solution, with sealing-wax. The cup serving for the installation of the candle stick was in very bad state of preservation; due to defects in the crystalline structure, this piece was impossible to repair by soldering, thus it was replaced by a new piece made with metal-pressure. The practices followed are fairly uncommon in museum practice; the author argues for their application by referring to the status of the candlestick being in private property and still used; thus apart from aesthetic criteria, he had to bear in mind the necessities furnished by everyday use.
