Ferenc Fülep Restoration duties in museum practice from the viewpoint of archaeologists A few decades ago even in the biggest Hungarian museums one would find only self-trained restorers. Their activity is not very well known by the younger generation. Despite the fact that they were forced to carry out their work without proper academic and scientific training, these restorers founded their profession with admirable conscientiousness. It is very important that archaeologist-restorers should take part in the joint work of excavation. This is not yet a widespread practice with us. However, both the supply of materials needed for further scientific investigations as well as "in situ" removal make this type of participation indispensable. Restorers are likely to be found working in workshops though they should carry out their work in laboratories. In this respect it is absolutely necessary to take into account and utilize experiences gained abroad. For this, however, it would be advisable to pay more attention than till now to the language training of restorers.
