A Szarvasi Evangélikus Gyülekezet Levéltára (Archives of the Szarvas Evangelical Congregation)

registers are extant from 1624, marriage registers from 1645, death registers from 1676. In the group of the exercise of religion one finds records on the construction of the church, the activity of the convent and presbitery as well as of religious associations(1575-1872). The records on schools and education (construction and repair of schools, appointment and qualification of professors and teachers, journals of school commissions, etc. from 1648 to 1872) are in a separate group, similarly those connected with foundations (1533-1872) and with orphans (1749-1872). About 2 fifths of the entire archival material belong to the financial affairs of the congregation (16011872). The group of the so-called districtual matters embraces the circulars of the superintendents, the canonical visitations, the synodal journals, etc. (1599-1872). The registry of the pastor's office begins with 1913. The bequests preserved by the Archives (Gottlieb GAMAUF, György HRABOWSZKY, Sándor PRAY, Lajos PRUZSINSZKY, etc.) have significant source value, as they mainly contain manuscript copies of records and notes on ecclesiastical history. * There are adequate finding aids for research. The research room is open from 8 a.m. to noon on weekdays, a previous notice is desirable. The first mention of the archives dates from the 24th November 1734, when the minister began to take notes in the first register. There were two important arrangements in the archival material. From 1841 to 1852 the minister István JANCSOVICS arranged the existing material and provided it with an inventory, in which the records were entered up to about 1867.
