A Székesfehérvári Püspökség Levéltára (Székesfehérvár Episcopal Archives)

A SZÉKESFEHÉRVÁRI PÜSPÖKSÉG LEVÉLTÁRA (SZÉKESFEHÉRVÁR EPISCOPAL ARCHIVES) 8000 SZÉKESFEHÉRVÁR, Szabadság tér 10. Tel. 11-490. Archivist: János SULYOK The bishopric of Székesfehérvár was founded by Queen Maria Theresa in 1777, its territory was carved out of the extensive diocese of Veszprém. At the same time the bishopric of Veszprém handed over also the records pertaining to the area of the new diocese to it. The administration of the diocese took place in the episcopal court (aula), except the jurisdiction of the Court Christian, which was exercised in the court sittings, also the drafting of the records was made by the notary of the Court Christian. Apart from the episcopal chancery and the Court Christian the bishopric had also some independent offices, like the finance department, the diocesan Inspectorate of Schools and the Council of Religious Art. In the episcopal seminary a self-standing registry came to being as well. The first arrangement of the episcopal archives was due to the archivist Károly AIGNER. He divided the records in 6 large groups according to subjects in 1816. Parallel to the arrangement of the archives a new system of record management was introduced. Instead of the hitherto followed practice of entering the records into the protocols the acts of the filed and settled affairs came into the archives and were placed according to the system of Aigner. The archival reference was noted also in the register. From the last quarter of the nineteenth century the archives were rather neglected, so a rearrangement became necessary. This was done from 1933 by István KUTHY, who established some new subject groups. The archives also took over the records of some extinct ecclesiastical offices, or institutions, respectively. * The archival material totals 317 running metres. The oldest record, issued by Albert, the parson of Buda, dates from 1302. Otherwise the archives preserve only 4 charters prior to Mohács. In the so-called ancient archives we find the protocol "Acta ecclesiae Albaregalensis" (1777-1827) to which the records of diocesan government were copied. The Protocollum intimatorum (1777-1816) contains copies of decrees issued by the Locotenential Council and the Hungarian Court
