The so-called 1397 canonical visitation register of the cathedral chapter of Esztergom

This book is the third (in fact, for reasons to be set out below, the fourth) volume of the series dealing with the fifteenth-century personnel of the cathedral chapter of Esztergom. In the first volume, building on the evidence of five letters of attorney issued between 1453 and 1460, in the course of the litigation over the tithes of Sasad,

examined the numbers of the chapter, the ranking order of the canons, and their office-holding. In the second part of the volume I presented individual careers, or „parallel biographies" based on the information provided by the research that was necessary to distiguish between canons bearing the same name who held office in the chapter of Esztergom or elsewhere.1343

In the second volume, I have explored the litigation over the Sasad

tithes

mentioned above, as well as the extraordinary activities of some of the canons already known from the first volume. In the middle of the 1430s, a lawsuit started between the cathedral chapter and the monastery of Pécsvárad

on

account of the possession of the tithes due from the vines located in the vili

of Nevegy, under the jurisdiction of the parish of Sasad.

The

archives of the plaintiff, the cathedral chapter of Esztergom, have preserved almost completely the sources connected to the case. One of them is a copybook-like register, which presents the decade-long history of the suit from the perspective of the chapter, detailing the activities and expenses of its members who functioned as attorneys between 1452 and 1464. This register is published and analysed in the second volume, which mainly concentrates on the political and church historical aspects of the topic.1344

The unnumbered volume which appeared as third in the series, contains the list of the members of the cathedral chapter (today arch-chapter) and three collegiate chapters that functioned at Esztergom, as well as the names of the persons who constituted the holy see of Esztergom and the dates between which they were active.
