The Cathedral Chapter of Esztergom in the Fifteenth Century. Illrd Part
276 The Cathedral Chapter of Esztergom in the Pifteenth Century. Illrd Part made it obvious that neither the date of its making can be established nor its analysis carried out without resort to the archontology of the chapter itself. As everyone else, I have turned for information to the volume containing the list and dates of office-holding of the Esztergom chapter, which ows its final form to Ferenc Kollányi. 1345 Yet it soon became obvious that the work offerred no practical help, precisely because one of its main sources had been the canonical visitation itself. Consequently, the only way of constructing a solid basis for the analysis of the register was to elaborate the archontology of the chapter from scratch. The starting date was the first mention of a local canon, while the closing date was the occupation of Esztergom by the Ottomans in 1543. The list of dignitaries, office- and prebend-holders as presented in the archontology is based on the public and private charters from the archives of the Esztergom chapter still preserved at Esztergom, as well as the published charter collections from the period investigated, using and checking the evidence contained in the work of Kollányi. 1346 1345 Kollányi F.: Esztergomi kanonokok. 1346 Esztergomi arch. 1347 Registrum Strig. 1348 Kollányi F.: Esztergomi kanonokok vii -lvi. 1349 On earlier work see Solymosi L.: Az egri káptalan statútuma 137-156., főleg 137- 139., or Registrum Strig. 9-47., passim. The third (chronologically fourth) and last volume of the series offers the edition and analysis of the so-called 1397 register of the canonical visitation (canonica visitatio) of the Esztergom cathedral chapter. In the first part (Studies) I undertake an in-depth investigation of the date and method when and how the work was compiled, based on the previous volumes and further sources. I also explore the extent to which its contents correspond to the picture emerging from the other sources. The register copied in the second half of the fifteenth century, which includes both the 1397 canonical visitation and the statutes of the chapter, is one of the most valuable sources of medieval Hungarian ecclesiastical history. This little book fits surprisingly well another register, one from the first quarter of the sixteenth century, which contains the minutes of the chapter sessions and sheds light on the economic activities of the Esztergom chapter.1347 The altogether 49 questions of the canonica visitatio cover a multitude of topics, relating among other things to the foundation, the sustenance of the canons and prebendaries, the rights and obligations of the archbishop and the chapter, the dignitaries and prebends of the chapter, that is, practically all the aspects of the life of the church of Esztergom. Many of these, especially the ones connected to the working of the chapter, were already exploited by Kollányi,1348 and since then the greatest scholarly attention has been focussed on the contents of the statutes.1349 Since the register of canonical visitation has proved an inexhaustible source, it is no wonder that everyone turned to it for
